ActionAmongst our varied beliefs is one that the world we live in can be made a better place. We believe in activism. This includes involvement in environmental issues from the local (e.g. recycling) to the global (e.g. nuclear testing in the Pacific). We support action against human rights abuses, such as those over the past 20 years in East Timor and many other places, often highlighted by Amnesty International. On the local York scene, we are especially interested in supporting positive action. For a long time we have had a wish to open a community-based centre for 16-30 year-olds. The Cafe Mosaic project was born out of this idea. We are a local distribution point for organic farm produce (mainly vegetables, eggs, and fruit) from Goosemoorganics, a small-holding which aims to reduce food-miles, keeping people close to their source of healthy food. More recently we have become involved in helping to support the setting up of a local Credit Union. The idea behind Credit Unions is to empower those on low incomes, or who are refused bank accounts, to help each other by saving together co-operatively, and running their own lending scheme at reasonable rates of interest, hopefully putting loan sharks out of business. |
