With You

This morning I painted a sunrise especially for you.
In shimmers of reds and gold.
But you didn't notice.
You shivvered and said "The nights are drawing in.
I really hate the winter."

As you left the house for the office
I sculptured piles of leaves in myriad colours.
And blew them gently so they shimmered and
tossed like the waves on the sea.
You hurried by.
You were scared of being late for work.

You looked tired. So just before you walked through
The door I caressed you with a gentle frosty breeze.
Hoping you would feel a little better.
You blinked and smiled gently
But you didn't notice me.

Later in the morning.
I sent a friend to see you.
I knew you craved some company
And as you talked at lunch.
I gave you coffee with a smile.

But you never thought of me.
And soon the stress piled up once more.
And you complained that work was awful
And sometime soon you'd leave.

So I sent you flowers.
Not by Interflora.
But in the Park across the road.
I gave you fuchsias and crysanthemeums.
And deep berries of blood red
To remind you of my love.
But you never even looked.

Instead you buried your head in a pile of paper.
And complained that you needed a holiday.
So I gave you one.

A few weeks later.
I gave you snow of brilliant white.
A roaring fire, and mulled wine with your friends.
And then you came to see me.
You sang songs about my birthday.
And lit a candle for the sick.

And just for once you thought of me.
And remembered.
And truly happy I embraced you.
Coverered you with white confetti like a bride.
But listen (pause)
I'm still with you.
On an ordinary day.
